Black Bird Group was founded in late 2021, when its founders came together to monitor and assess the mounting signs of Russia’s coming invasion of Ukraine. What began as a small collaborative effort to follow military developments, open-source information, and the broader strategic picture soon grew into a wider analytical project.

Over time, Black Bird Group developed into a Finland-based community of analysts, researchers, and volunteers focused on producing clear, evidence-based analysis on the war in Ukraine and related questions of European security. In autumn 2023, Black Bird Group formally became a non-governmental organisation, providing a stronger institutional basis for its work. Today, the NGO combines open-source intelligence, field-oriented military analysis, and public communication to support a better understanding of the war and the security challenges facing Europe.
